April 2006

Dear Brothers,

The annual brother’s retreat at Laurel Lake Camp in PA is planned for April 28-30. This is a Christian retreat that is open to men and older boys (11+) who wish to “fight the good fight of faith”. Laurel Lake Camp is in a rural setting near Rossiter PA (east of Pittsburg – maps are available) and provides a wonderful opportunity to gather with other men from various locations for prayer, singing, and ministry in the various gifts of the Holy Spirit.

Afghan man faces death for converting to Christianity

Received via email from Bruce Hempel:

Dear ones,

Please pray for Abdul Rahman, an Afghan man who is facing a possible death sentence for converting to Christianity.  Under Muslim shariah law, it is punishable by death to convert from Islam to any other religion.

Please also pray that the news from this case will serve to break Islam's hold on Afghanistan.

Would you be interested in online recordings of our meetings?

This is an example of what we are thinking of doing (though the audio quality would improve in the future):

Testimonies:

Chris Strickland:

I was reading a verse in my quiet time, and the Lord showed me something new in it and something that really intrigued me. We were talking about Paul on the retreat. Paul had some of the best education in law and then God knocked him off his donkey, blinded and, sent to an inn in Damascus to await further instructions. I was contemplating these two things and thinking, “how do they come together. I was also reading Matthew 13:52 and Jesus says, "Therefore every teacher of the law who has been instructed about the kingdom of heaven is like the owner of a house who brings out of his storeroom new treasures as well as old." This was one of these verses that you say: “I never saw that before.”  God wants new treasure to come out of our hearts too.

Becky Teubl:

I had a wowing experience this week. This week I was very humbled by a nonchristain. I was talking to my former BHS professor and he said, “I can’t force people to believe the things that are what the majority of the people think and so he decided to quite his job.” Because of the people in that educational department act like this I am quitting my job.

Claudia Teubl:

I am sharing what Gracie has been reading. The book she has been reading says that the reason that the end time has not come is because that people have been interceding for other friends, family members and others of such. I thought that was an interesting idea.

Larry Strickland:

Did anyone have a little bit of snow? Well that is due to Zacery. We were praying in our family devotions, and Zacery was the first to pray. He prayed that we would have snow. Then two other siblings prayed that we wouldn’t have snow. My encouragement is to pray first.

James Williams:

I have feel led to pray for Jonathan Teubl. I have talked to Jon on the phone and when I do I ask him how he is doing and he says lets talk about how you are doing because all of my life is studying. I have a burden to pray for his studies and many of the other things he is going through everyday. It is a very burdensome thing on my heart.

Andres San Millan:

I have had some people that are in Romania on my heart. I met them on my trip to Spain. There names are: Tiberios and Nadia. They have been on my heart lately and I would like to pray.

Chris Strickland:

There is a person at work.  He has a stepdaughter, she is becoming rebellious, and his way of dealing with it is to just make her learn it. I would like to pray for him, he is a Christian and he has a hard time at work too with some of the people.

Mike Williams:

If you could also pray for Sue’s mom she is becoming weaker and she is going down hill.

Teaching Time:

Mr. Hempel:

Jesus said if you love the ones who love you then it is a usual thing. But if you love the ones that hate you than you are really suffering. I met a man a while ago and he said that he had had hurt his daughter deeply and it was hard for him to feel forgiven.  There is feeling associated with love. Love is a sincere desire to like someone.  I used to be in meeting where people gave their lives to Christ and you could really see the love of the Lord.  We could see the love for their enemies in the form of the story of Perpetua and how she was a martyr for Christ.  One who is faithful in little is faithful in much. Last week in church we shared a verse in the Sermon on the Mount. No one puts a candle under a bowl but they put it on a stand. We want to put God's glory on a stand.

In the Jewish costume a bridegroom would go to the brides family and ask them if he could marry the to-be-bride. Then the bridegroom would go away and prepare a place for her and then he would come back with his friends and they would have a wedding. We have to be ready for our bridegroom.  I met someone once and she said that her father would pray the Lords prayer over her every night. That is a real blessing.  This week we had some of the Williams children over, we were trying to memorize a verse, and there was much repetition. A couple days later they still knew it.  I want to ask you, "How do you decide what to read?" How many subscribe to the random bible reading theory?  You can get disoriented if you do random reading, and you will sometimes not get to the parts in numbers or in the other parts of the bible that you would get to if you weren’t.  Now I would like to turn to I Corinthians 13

I Corinthians 13:1

Little sidetracked from here down.  This is what we are supposed to do for homework.

Lectio Divina – Excellent process for studying or meditating

  1. For 2 min – read the passage slowly.
  2. For 2 min – meditate
  3. For 2 min – Pray on it
  4. For 2 min – Believe

It can be very hard. “My mind is like Enoch(our dog).  When you open the door he wonders. “What is he doing that for”?  When I tell him, ‘already lets go this way,’ he goes the other way.”  God wants to slow our minds down.

Mind wandering?  Don’t worry; just come back to where you were suppose to be. Say to yourself: "Ok lets get back on track here."

Try it on 1 Corinthians 13.  Here’s the praying part.

God is love.  So meditate on it.

“Lord helps me to be patient, help me to be kind, etc…”

“Pray from the passage pertaining to the things God is speaking to you about.  2 minute is not a lot of time to pray.  Jesus didn’t feel that 1 hour was long to pray.  Different things help when we have to pray for a long time.  For instance, I find it helpful to walk around or to hold a Bible. These things keep my mind focused on what I need to pray about.  May this help you and may God bless you all.

Praise report about attempted Dang tribe reconversion to Hinduism

> Recently I wrote to you about the Dangs tribe in Gujrat, India; the "shabri
> kumb" organized for the 9th - 12th of February when the Dangs would be
> forced to reconvert. Many of you have prayed about this situation and
> passed the information on to others as well, and this is a follow-up email
> to tell you the rest of the story.
>
> My family heard from the relative of ours, who is a missionary there. This
> is info that probably would be in no newspaper. Prior to the "shabri
> kumb" the fundamentalists who were organizing this event, had laid roads
> leading into the forests where the tribes live. They also had built tanks
> to hold water (for maybe a baptism back into Hinduism), and constructed
> 31 tents, each tent with a capacity to handle 10,000 people! They were
> expecting a huge crowd of people to show up and many Hindu religious
> leaders had begun to arrive at the area.
>
> On the 9th a Court Order came through, forbidding any forced reconversions.
> However the government can do nothing to stop the gathering. On the 10th
> out of nowhere there was a mighty wind that knocked down the tents, making
> it hard for them to gather for the event as intended. Besides the number of
> people that they expected to attend the event, did not show up. So at the
> end of the ordeal, the Dangs who live in the forests have roads laid out
> and water tanks!
>
> However, please continue to pray, as the area still has many
> fundamentalists who will be trying to talk the people out of Jesus. The
> missionaries are hoping to pray another 3 days specifically about this, so
> if you feel led to please join in continue to pray for the current
> situation in Gujrat.
>
> Thanks for all your prayers! Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. What an
> awesome God we have! Praise the Lord God Almighty!
